I found this review of Substitution Cipher today. It made me really happy.

Substitution Cipher comes out in a week! I've got a blog post about the history behind the alternate history and one about my inspirations. I ... glossed over a lot of things, because I didn't want to write a 50-page essay.

It's up on Amazon, but not on Candlemark & Gleam's site yet. (Buy direct!)

Since I'd only seen the front cover before, not the back, I didn't know that my story was one of the three briefly blurbed in the back copy! Yay!

Going to see the Hobbit Friday night. I'm skeptical of Jackson's vision for it, as well as the whole stretching it over three movies thing, but I have to see it.

I also got answers to my questions about the STI revisions, so that's good, and I think I can take those last couple things, tidy them up, re-read it, and send it back. Yay?

Revisions

I finished my first pass of revisions on Something There Is. The short story is now a novelette, at 7600 words. I had two questions for the editor about comments she made that I didn't understand, so I sent her email asking about them (and explaining one thing I want to stet) and asked if the increased length was OK. I mean, I added 340 words to it today, just expanding on the last two notes on the document. (Which, I hope, makes it stronger.)

So I wait until I get clarification on the two comments I didn't understand and find out if I have to trim it back down...

Then since I hit my word target for the novel before 10:30 am, I spent part of the afternoon making revisions on my short story, following the revision notes I got. I only need clarifications on two and am arguing to stet one. I haven't gotten to the last section (which has 2 comments in it, both of which I think are right on), but I think I'm going to take a nap instead.

+175, 7278 words (7300 including the title? Not sure where Scrivener's word count is finding those extra 22 words otherwise).

Making the needed changes to the ending will add another hundred words? 200? I don't know, exactly, and I'll have a look at it, uh, Tuesday? Since I'm in a tai chi workshop all weekend and another CE on Monday.

After dinner, I'm going to take a first stab at the revisions to Something There Is, since I'm home alone till Ben gets back from his dinner.

You may notice that this is fewer words than I had yesterday. I decided to completely redo the refinery scene, which meant scrapping 1600 words. I was able to reuse ~300 of them, but I'm still net negative for the day.

But that's OK. I'll get more later.

Also, I got the revision notes for my story. Some of them are very much, "you know, that's a good point," and some have the additional "...but can I do that?" Good editor, this. This is going to be a much better story at the end. (Also possibly reaching into novella territory. Novelette? 7500+, whatever that is.) I just need to get them back by May 20.

(And I have 2 prompts to write for springkink, one due 5/5 that I haven't even started yet, erk.)

I think I like this version. I incorporated some of Mo's suggestions, and it's up to 7100 words. Which is a lot for me, because short stories are hard. I want to submit it shortly after the new year, around the 3rd or 4th, so if you've got the first draft and haven't gotten me your comments, let me know if you want the new version. Also, if you could get me comments by the 2nd, that would be awesome.

The first entry is longer by a lot, and there are some more details.

Also, please, if any of my German friends are willing to give this a read-over for early GDR stuff, let me know. I've poked around wikipedia and googled some stuff, but I don't want to have someone be like, "pff, you could totally get Milka in the GDR in 1961" or whatever.
