My writing group liked the Thanksgiving scene and thought I set up the local color very well. The German guy's reaction to green bean casserole got laughs. (green beans + cream of mushroom soup + those little fried onion things from a can -> oven. It's SO 1950s traditional, and I haven't eaten it in years because Ben hates green beans.)

Date: 2013-05-10 02:41 am (UTC)From:The cream soup part isn't great, either, because a lot of the time it's so bland (I think the brand matters a lot in this part), and I don't like bland mushy food (I recoil in horror from mayonnaise). Only in green bean casserole do these things somehow become tolerable.
Kind of like tuna salad, actually - I hate pretty much ever single mayo+something 'salad' out there, from egg to chicken to pasta, but something about tuna salad defies my usual reaction and I like it a lot.

Date: 2013-05-10 03:33 pm (UTC)From:I'm not a big fan of mayo or avocado or guacamole, though I can tolerate thin mayo on a sandwich if there's nothing else to spread on it. (I, heretically, prefer Miracle Whip. It has a flavor. Though I had an herbed mayo that was OK.)
I hear you on the bland, mushy food. Blech.

Exactly the same here. It's like spreading oil on my food; gross.

My standard joke-explanation is that I'm such a multitasker I'm always doing other things while eating, so my food needs to have lots of flavour or else I won't even notice it. :D Hence bland is the enemy.

Thanksgiving dinner is fun, if stressful (because of family crap, not to mention wrangling a dozen different dishes). Mine tend toward untraditional, since I don't eat meat, but we manage somehow. If you're ever in the same place as me, I'll invite you over!
