In decisions I need to make

Whether to take my netbook (of the sketchy battery and hard drive with 1 GB of free space, but very small and lightweight) or the MacBook (with good battery and a hard drive with 40+ GB free, but bigger and fucking heavy).

The netbook does almost everything I need. It connects to the internet, and I can download pictures from my camera. I don't expect to be able to write much while I'm there, also I don't really want to spend a lot of time thinking in English. The only thing it can't do is handle flash. I can't play Farmville on it (or any stupid flash games), and trying to play a youtube video took me to a "download this codec pack" thing, which then crashed the browser without fully installing. [Also, I need to update the distro, but there's not enough free space on the disk to download the image. Derp. No, I don't have a multi-GB USB key to run the computer off of. If I did, I probably would.]

Now, I can live a month without videos; I don't watch them as it is. But ... FARMVILLE, Y'ALL.

The MacBook is Mac-tastic, and it works, but it weighs like 3 lbs or more, and lugging it around in my backpack is heavy.

They both have their pluses and minuses (another big minus for the netbook is its lack of a CD drive, so I couldn't rip any new CDs I bought, or play them if my flatmate doesn't have a communal stereo.)

I need to decide right quick, you know? My dear invisible friends, what do y'all think?

Having done international travel with a laptop- I vote for the netbook. I wish I'd had mine when I went to Geneva. I don't play Farmville, though.

I guess the question is, while you're there, will you be lugging it around a lot, or will it stay in your room?

That depends on whether I have internet access at my room, or if I'll have to take advantage of the free wifi at the Institut for all my internet needs. If a, then it'll be home most of the time. If b, then I'll be carrying it around every day.

But that's because I think 3 lbs is nothing compared to what my f-ing huge laptop weighs. :P

It's actually closer to 6 lbs. I'm apparently rubbish at guessing weight. The netbook doesn't weigh any more than my DS.

Carry the bigger one, think of it as built-in exercise.

Also, Farmville = the end of civilization.

It's significantly heavier, enough so to make my back (which already has issues) hurt. I tried lugging it around at the writers conference I went to, and it was, well, both annoying and painful.

But CD player...

ETA: I just checked the specs, and it's actually 5.5 lbs. Heavy enough to be really annoying.

(Yes, farmville is pretty evil. I haven't really played in a few weeks anyway, but I'll have time again.)

I bought my Netbook JUST so I could write on the go.

Also, having a sore back does not help for writing focus.

True enough! I don't really expect to get any writing in (because I'm addicted to Scrivener, and that won't run on the netbook; also I'll be in class 20ish hour a week and running around eastern Germany the rest of the time), but the weight difference is ... enormous.

I'll see if the replacement battery I ordered arrives before I leave. It shipped, and the estimated delivery date is ... May 3. 2 days after I leave.

Order a new battery for the netbook and a big ass thumb drive (and back up/clean up your hard drive before you go).

We'll see if the battery gets here before I leave -_- 3 day UPS shipping: can we make it?? Considering May 3 is the current estimated delivery date, I somehow doubt it.

The disk drive is only 4 GB; most of what's on there is the OS and program files.
