- Legend of Galactic Heroes: a treatise on American interventionism? A prophetic look at Bush 43-era politics? (I'm slowly working through it at 2-3 episodes a day. I should be through all 110 episodes, 24 gaiden 1 episodes, 28 Spiral Labyrinth gaiden 2 episodes, the Golden Wings OAV (omg, tiny Sieg & Reinhard!), and the 2 movies by, uh, ... 162 episodes divided by 2 is 81 days, factor in weekends and vacations and working... October?)

It's really weird to hear the voice of Oberstein, this scheming space German dude, because he was voiced by Shiozawa Kaneto, who was Iason Mink in Ai no Kusabi. A silky voice is not how I imagine schemers to talk. O_o

Man, I really need to watch all of Boring Gay Germans in Space. Wasn't it all not subbed, at least a little while ago?

I think Central Anime got through all of it finally. I have most of it either on my computer or burned to DVD.

CJ Cherryh does a LOT of liminality in her works. The space furries (uh, Chanur series) features a human who gets involved in their politics. The Faded Sun trilogy (in one omnibus, and it's AWESOME) has a different human who winds up on an intergalactic mercenary assassin ship. I could probably go on, but you've read Foreigner. Bren = liminal, and as he acclimates to Atevi culture, humans seem weird to him. (I think that's pretty obvious by the end of the first trilogy, but I can't remember now.)

IT WAS CREEPY. In the first 3 episodes, I was like "Wut. PKC = Bushtards who said support Bush or you support terra." And it only got MORE like 2001 from there. Except without a literal coup d'etat (I'm up to episode 22 now.)

Though I was sort WTF when they revealed that the Empire dude's name is Goldenbaum. Uh, yeah, those are German words that put together mean Gold(en) Tree, but, uh, it's kinda associated with people of Jewish ethnicity. I laughed. Pretty hard.

Hearing "Germans" in anime is always kinda interesting to me. I still remember the "Su-nai-da" (er, Schneider) character from somewhere toward the end of Rurouni Kenshin...

Compound this with the fact that when I watch a foreign language show/film, I tend for some reason to remember the lines as being delivered in German (don't ask me), and it gets double-weird with a cherry on top.

It's sometimes rather painful, isn't it? They seem to have picked names that the Japanese can mostly pronounce - Mittermeyer, Oberstein, Lohengramm - though Kircheis is kind of complicated. They make a fairly passable attempt at ü (though it's more yu than ue; it's not oo anyway.)

That sounds like quite a recipe for befuddlement, there. Though when I first started taking Japanese at UNC, I started answering in German a lot. Because it wasn't English, right? -__-

It's just one of those things. "I understood this, and it is not in my native language, therefore it must have been in the other language that I understand." I figure that's how it works, anyway. The mind is a many splintered thing.
