I still wish space opera were a less conservative subgenre. Though CJ Cherryh's books do quite well, and it's possible to bring a lefty reading to them. Anti-colonialism (the atevi), subverting the Dances With Wolves/Mighty Whitey trope (the Faded Sun), anti-authoritarianism (Alliance-Union, especially Union space and the azi). And she's got GAY PEOPLE. Still mostly whitish future Americans, but.
I was kind of shocked to find gay relationships (in the background) of Darkship Thieves, while there's some very dogwhistley anti-Muslim sentiment (and that perplexing bit on p 87, which I still can't figure out the meaning of). Gay is OK but Allah isn't. Right then.
