They don't get it at all. It's a perfect illustration of being born on third base and thinking they'd hit a triple. "Oh, I did all this work all by myself, and I don't know why those other people can't do like I did. Those lazy bums are encouraged to dependency by the existence of welfare."
It's that attitude that was the absolute last straw for me, which is why I have a libertarian EX-boyfriend.
