Day 25: Asexual awareness week

I'm asexual. Now you're aware.


It took a long time for me to accept and claim that label for myself. I've never found sex all that interesting; it was just What You Do. It took reading a lot of thirst posts on tumblr and people talking about how much they have sex and want to have sex that absolutely don't resonate with me. Plus a lot of memes about cake being better than sex, and, well, yeah. I'd rather have cake. Or brownies, or cookies, or whatever.

It's been 5 or 6 years I think since I accepted that fact. I can't say that this wasn't a factor in my divorce; mismatched sex drives can be a problem. There were several factors, of which this was a minor one.

My roller derby name, Hardace, is both an allusion to asexuality and a play on "hardass." I have pride stickers on my helmet. I'm not shy about it anymore, at least not in queer(-friendly) spaces.

High five from another ace!

I occasionally reflect on the "Yeah, sex is cool, but have you ever had garlic bread?" ace meme, and ruefully conclude that I am a total stereotype. Don't get me wrong, cake is good, but... well, have you had garlic bread? :P I'm convinced sex can't be better than that. Very few things are better than that!

I could make an argument for cheesy bread, like the ones from Domino's, but I'm really picky about garlic bread. Sometimes it just tastes Wrong, but mozzarella on breadsticks is hard to get wrong.

All of this makes me realize it's been a while since I ate regular old yellow cake from the store and that I was tempted by a box of Funfetti cake mix that had little bats and stuff as the fetti and would have bought it if there had been a matching frosting next to it.

Heh. Meanwhile, I would never rate cheesy bread anywhere on the scale of positive experiences. Garlic all the way! (I'm just not a bland cheese fan; mild cheese on white bread is too meh without pizza sauce and pepperoni and sausage and olives to spice it up! Go full pizza, or at least give me garlic breadsticks with marinara. :) I don't like mac-n-cheese, either, for much the same reason: fake cheese plus bland pasta, nope! Not even as a kid would I eat more than a bite or two to be polite.)

Some garlic breads are definitely weird and wrong, though, especially store-bought versions. I suspect they're using some kind of oil instead of or in addition to butter, or perhaps the dough has commercial dough conditioners in it.

Oooh, Halloween Funfetti cake?! Funfetti cake is one of those irredeemably fake yet incredibly delicious foods I never outgrew! I like it best with cream cheese icing, but I'll eat it with pretty much anything on top. :D

Oh, yeah, cheesy bread definitely needs a dipping sauce, like garlic butter or marinara. "Why not eat pizza,then?" you ask? It's a different experience, I guess? It's like getting the crusts, but covered in cheese. I am definitely a crust-eater!

Funfetti with cream cheese icing? That sounds good but also wrong, lol. Gotta have the stuff from a can to go with the super fake fetti.

Ooooh, yes, pizza crust is the best! I'm one of those weirdos who eats pizza crust-first. (I'm an adult; I can eat the best part first if I want to.) :D

I've reached a point in my life where the nostalgia for fake canned icing has lost out to the fact that it's too sweet for me to enjoy; I think of it fondly because kid!me thought it was magical and rare, but now I can hardly eat it, so I stick with cream cheese icing, as it's not quite so sweet.

I also like cake a lot, it would be a hard decision if I had to choose either sex or cake, and I guess depends on the sex and the cake.

I made this birthday cake one year that had a hazelnut meringue bottom with a rich chocolate cake on top, all covered with a chocolate-hazelnut ganache, and it was amazing. I can't find the recipe online, though it came from Bon Appetit like 2003.
