I'd need to be close enough to Hamburg to make a 24-hour trip reasonable. Berlin is like 2 hours by ICE, and if you get a less desirable time (11:45) and a discount fare, you can go for 30€ each way. With a BahnCard, you can save more, too. Munich is 6 hours and 80€ and up.
(also I really dislike Munich as a city and it's really expensive)
It sucks that Google Hamburg and Berlin are all regulatory/business/admin jobs, though :/ His interests and skills are graphics, primarily. 3D modeling, VR, that kind of thing. He has an MS and 20 years experience (which is why startups don't call him back).
