What are they thinking?

Why does anyone think they can still get away with selling one 13-episode season of anime for $70?

I thought it was Funimation who was trying to sell Mouretsu Pirates for that price ($140 for the full series! What is this, 2003?), but, no, it's Sentai, which is one of the things ADV exploded into. Though Funi's trying to sell a single season of Black Butler or Fam for $70. I liked Fam, but not $140 worth, maybe not the $80 RightStuf is selling it for. $60, I think.

If they're really going for the "fewer sales at higher price" model, I almost like the more extreme plan some studios have gone with, where they start out releasing a ridiculous collector's box set with lots of goodies for well into a three-figure price, to really milk the fans who happen to have money (but at least they're getting something special for the price), and then release a reasonably-priced thin-pack or something later. Granted, they may do the thin-pack thing for these current $70 sets in a year or two, but the $70 price point seems less useful - too high to be economical, too low to be able to include any nice merchandise incentives in the package.
