What are they thinking?

Why does anyone think they can still get away with selling one 13-episode season of anime for $70?

I thought it was Funimation who was trying to sell Mouretsu Pirates for that price ($140 for the full series! What is this, 2003?), but, no, it's Sentai, which is one of the things ADV exploded into. Though Funi's trying to sell a single season of Black Butler or Fam for $70. I liked Fam, but not $140 worth, maybe not the $80 RightStuf is selling it for. $60, I think.

I know. I'd love to buy anime on dvd, but the prices are so unrealistic!

They may not have much control over this. Or they are experiencing the Japanese dilemma of fewer fans so hose what fans you have for max pricing. I have been out of the loop for a while but you should be glad that Mouretsu is getting a physical release period when you see how badly Sword Art Online fans are getting fucked.
SAP is streaming only. Not even a DL you can burn yourself.

If they're really going for the "fewer sales at higher price" model, I almost like the more extreme plan some studios have gone with, where they start out releasing a ridiculous collector's box set with lots of goodies for well into a three-figure price, to really milk the fans who happen to have money (but at least they're getting something special for the price), and then release a reasonably-priced thin-pack or something later. Granted, they may do the thin-pack thing for these current $70 sets in a year or two, but the $70 price point seems less useful - too high to be economical, too low to be able to include any nice merchandise incentives in the package.
