Actually you can say both "der Teil" and "das Teil" the words just mean slightly different things (at least in the variety of German I speak). It is "der Teil" if you mean a fraction of a whole thing, like a percentage part (as in "der Anteil"), but "das Teil" if the part is an complete sub-entity on its own, like a car part (as in "das Ersatzteil").
