Because there's this meme among some set of conservatives that says Amtrak is evil because it gets all this government funding (which it really doesn't, and ticket sales cover a not insignificant fraction of operating costs), while our gasoline-powered cars and "pay-go-funded" (except not really) roads are sacrosanct.

Would you also like to see federal funding for road building and maintenance cut? Because people in North Carolina ought not to be funding the monstrosities of California freeways, either.
