We *are* looking at how stupid the tea party is. However, going in and pointing out "well, maybe the intent was to say 'the magic phrase "separation of church and state" isn't in the Constitution'" is a cousin of the problem.
It's making excuses for the behavior in question, in this case, being either willfully ignorant or a rules lawyer. Neither of these behaviors is worthy of having excuses made for them.
