I hate hate hate this kind of handwaving of abusive personalities, and, alas, I have nothing but sympathy for you. I wish there were some way to thump people in the heads about this kind of thing. If he's verbally abusive, then there's good bets he's abusive in other ways too, and those victims have probably just done a fast fade in the face of his wall of "good buddies".
